Chinese Steamed Bun / 包子[bāozi] or 肉包[ròubāo]

Baozi is a really common small eat all over Asia. If you have traveled to Japan, Vietnam and Philippines, you may probably have seen something similar to this.

Baozi is made of fermented dough, just like a bun. However, instead of being baked, Baozi is processed by steam. Thus, Baozi is tenderer and softer than a bun.  Baozi comes with variety of stuffing, it can be stuffed with sweet red bean, and it can also be stuffed with savoury seafood or meat.  The most common flavour is spiced pork.

The shop I ate today offers 3 different kinds of flavours:

1. Original / 原味[yuán wèi] - Stuffed with minced pork, and seasoned with salt, spices and spring onion.

2. Bamboo shoot / 筍子[sǔn zi] - In addition to the original flavour, chopped bamboo shoot is added to the stuffing, which adds sweetness and enhances the flavour or Baozi.

3. Spicy / 麻辣[má là] - Although its name looks spicy, it is not that strong for most of people. The spiciness is added by the pepper, not chili. Therefore, it is not super spicy, I would say it is pretty mild for everyone.

The shop I ate today is not popular nor famous, it is just an ordinary and traditional Baozi shop that I walked pass by. What really attracted me is the combo deal it offers: 2 Baozi + 1 Drink = TWD$39 only! You can choose any 2 kinds of flavour you desired, and get a cup of soy milk or black tea, for only TWD$39. I wouldn't say this is the best Baozi I every tried, but this is definitely a great deal!

I wouldn't recommend you to come all the way here to eat Baozi in this specific shop. But, if you are around the neighbourhood, or just finished visiting National Museum of Natural Science, this would be good choice for your afternoon snack. :)

How to Order:

Step 1: Tell the owner which flavour you desire by the Mandarin pronunciation on this page, or point on your smart phone and show it to the owner. (Original = 原味[yuán wèi], Bamboo shoot = 筍子[sǔn zi], Spicy = 麻辣[má là])

Step 2: Tell the owner what kind of drink you want, soy milk or black tea, you can simply point it on the fridge.

Step 3: Take a seat, wherever not occupied.

Step 4: Wait for the owner to deliver the delicious Baozi to you.

Step 5: Pay the money to owner when she delivers Baozi to you.

Step 6: Enjoy! :)
