Steamed Rice / 蒸飯[zhēng fàn] + Sour and Spicy Soup / 酸辣湯[suān là tāng]


Normally, the rice we eat is boiled rice, it is not so common to see Steamed Rice. Today I have found a family style eatery offering this rarely seen dish.

To be honest, I have stayed long enough in Taiwan, but I have never tried anything like this before. I have traveled a lot in this country, but I have never seen this in any other cities. This is my first time to try it.


This eatery offers 3 different types of Steamed Rice: The First Generation Steamed Rice, The Second Generation Steamed Rice, and The Third Generation Steamed Rice. What a convenient way to name your product, isn't it? :)

What I ordered today is the Third Generation. It is seasoned rice covered with whitebait, sliced seaweed, HAM & CHEESE. (Just like a fusion cuisine!) And steam all of them together in the oven. After it is steamed, it will be sprinkled with almond on top of it before it is served.

Because of ham & cheese, this Steamed Rice doesn't really taste like a Taiwanese dish. It reminds me of my Canadian home stay mother, who always fried rice with butter and called it Chinese fried rice.(laugh) Anyways, I wouldn't recommend you to try this as a traditional Taiwanese dish, but if you are interested in something different, special and couldn't be found anywhere else, this may be a good try.


Another thing I tried along with my Steamed Rice is the Sour and Spicy Soup (麻辣羹湯[má là gēng tāng])

Normally, Sour and Spicy Soup is called 酸辣湯[suān là tāng], as its name, it tastes sour and spicy. Most of you may be familiar with Tom Yum from Thai cuisine, which tastes sour and spicy as well, but two of them taste quite differently. Tom Yum is seasoned with lemon, which makes it taste sour; but the sourness of Suan La Tang is brought by vinegar.

It is made of sliced carrot, black wood ear fungus, bamboo shoot, Chinese mushroom, tofu, and egg drop. Seasoned with white pepper, hot chili and vinegar. Both texture and taste are very rich because of the variety of ingredient.

Moreover, this eatery has made its Suan La Tang even richer by adding Sergestid Shrimp to the soup, which is only available in Taiwan and Japan.  This has added crispiness and enhanced the aroma of the soup.




One of the nicest thing about this eatery, it hangs many of its featured dishes with pictures. Thus, even if you can't read the Chinese menu, you may still have a good chance to get something you desire. :)



How to Order:

Step 1: Take an order slip from counter.

Step 2: Find an unoccupied table.

Step 3: Write the number of orders in the box of what you desire for.

- If you would like the Steamed Rice, fill in box  1 . You can choose your Steamed Rice to be sprinkled with either almonds (fill in upper box) or pumpkin seeds (fill in lower box)

- If you would like the Sour and Spicy Soup, fill in box  2 . You can choose the level of spiciness: upper box is for strong, middle box is for medium, and lower box is for mild. If you do not eat spicy food quite often, I would suggest you to just go for mild. (Trust me, it doesn't just burn your tongue and stomach, but also afterwards, you know what I mean...)

- The Sour and Spicy Soup can be served with rice or noodles, and the spiciness of both can be altered as well. If you would like Sour and Spicy Soup with Rice, fill in box  3 ; if you would like Sour and Spicy Soup with Noodles, fill in box  4 .

Step 4: Hand the slip to owner.

Step 5: When the dish is served, the owner will give the order slip back to you.

Step 6: Help yourself with cutlery and enjoy your meal. :)

Step 7: When finish, take the order slip to the counter and pay the bill.
